The Fine Print

The unique thing about the Tararua rivers is that they are flow-dependent. This means there needs to be recent rain to raise the water flow to a safe and enjoyable level. Between April and December, inflatable duckie trips can usually be booked on any day. Between January and April, the rivers are too low to run any trips unless booked directly after heavy rainfall.

As a commercial rafting company, we have high cut-off levels for whitewater rafting in our eight person rafts to ensure the safety of our customers. For duckie trip bookings, if the river is too high on the day of the trip, you will instead be guided down the river in one of our eight person rafts for an exhilarating, high-flow trip.

The Akatarawa Canyoning Trip operates all year around, however if water levels are out of our companies safety limitations your trip may be rescheduled. Wellington Rafting have the right at any time to cancel a tour due to severe weather predictions that is forecast from Metservice.

A medium level of fitness is required for all duckie trips, the Akatarawa Canyoning Trip and the Grade 3 Wilderness Rafting trip.

Transportation to the meeting points for the Akatarawa Canyoning Trip and all Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River) can be provided for the following prices:

$20 per person Upper Hutt Train Station pick up and drop off.
$75 per person Wellington Train Station pick up and drop off (minimum of three people)

Please call us if you require transportation to the Waiohine Gorge or the Helicopter Access Raftings meeting points.

All adventure activities include some form of risk, Wellington Rafting does everything we can to keep our adventurers safe. When participating in our tours you will be required to sign a risk disclaimer form. For more information about the risks involved, see our risk disclosure.

Cancellation Policy.

All cancellations made by the customer will incur a 20% cancellation fee.
Cancellations made by the customer less than 24 hours before the trip will incur a 50% cancellation fee.
On the day cancellations or no shows will receive no refund of their payment.
Any cancellations made by Wellington Rafting (due to weather) will receive a full refund.
